Breaking the Screen

by Jessica Angel

On February 5, 2021, this curatorial text was originally published by the AAMMA magazine in augmented reality in the Spheroid Universe XR Hub specialized mobile application. The experimental publication allowed one to open and view objects in AR while reading the text.

Escaping the confines of the two dimensions of the screen, digital artists use the Spheroid Universe app to break the glass and display their three dimensional digital creations in live contextual environments using augmented reality. The apparent separation between digital and real finds an agreement, a consolidation of both worlds to provide a holistic experience of the virtual world in the physical realm. It is an exciting time where visual technologies are finding ways of cracking the monotony of decades of digital art displayed in computer monitors to provide an organic, innate experience of art acute to our dimensional senses.

Smart phones have become extensions of our bodies to a degree that, even though our experience of AR art still requires a device, the engagement of our bodies with the displayed work and its relationship to the space we inhabit mark the breaking-free moment from the computer screen.

In the context of the MakerSpace at the ETHDenver 2021 conference, this exhibition “BREAKING THE SCREEN” pushes the boundaries towards an experimental and refreshing way of perceiving digital scarce art, by using cutting edge technologies such as tokenized 3D digital art on the blockchain, visual positioning systems, GIGA’s (Giant AR Objects), and the Spheroid Universe technology. The #ArtProject Community and Spheroid Universe team worked in tandem to foster emerging artists in the crypto space, allowing them to explore new ways of exhibiting their work.

Ten selected artists via open call will have their 3D models displayed in different parts of the world, for the international audience at ETHDenver to venture out to these locations and discover these large scale hidden pieces in various cities.
